Our Needs

Partner with us to make Soap Box Derby® racing
a reality for Parkersburg and the Mid-Ohio Valley!

HERE is a detailed list of our
immediate startup expenses

Support kids in their race to the future! Help the Soap Box Derby® strengthen and grow our programs that have introduced youth around the world to racing since 1934. Make a contribution to programs designed to build essential STEM[1] skills that benefit young racers on the track, in their studies and in their future careers. Several school discticts in Ohio build Soap Box Derby racers as part of their STEM curriculum.

This page lists the equipment, supplies, franchise fees, and other expenses we have to pay in order for there to be a Derby in Parkersburg. Whatever you can contribute will be greatly appreciated and put to good use. Your tax-deductable contribution check should be made out to Parkersburg Soap Box Derby, Inc. Here’s our mailing address, or donate via PayPal using the link at the bottom of the page. Every little bit helps make this become a reality. Thank you!

Businesses and individuls who donate $1000 or more at a time may specify where they would like to have the funds used. Individual donations of less than $1000 will be placed in the General Fund to be used where neded. However, if you would like to make a donation of less than $1000 for a specific need (e.g., Stock Car, Franchise Fee, etc.), please contact us to see if that particular need has been met.

Note: We are charged a separate franchise fee for each sanctioned event.

Soap Box Derby Racing is a Year-Round Activity

To start and maintain a viable Soap Box Derby racing program in Parkersburg, a year-round effort is required.

Throughout the year we will be promoting the program and raising the funds to keep the program running (see the tables below). We will be actively recruiting boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 19 to become racers and we will be petitioning the area Boards of Education to incorporate Soap Box Derby STEM Education into their curriculae.

The “official” racing season is from October to July. Races may be held at any time, but the World Championship event is held at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, in July of each year, with over 100 race cities around the world qualifying champions to send to the World Championship race.

We anticipate that our “franchise area” will include not just Wood County, but at least a part of each of our bordering counties in both West Virginia and Ohio, so our efforts will be extended to all the counties in our area.

We plan to host multiple “unofficial” races throughout the race season. If there are enough young people interested in the program we might structure a series of races leading up to our local championship race, generally to be held in June (after we get up and running). If we are successful in getting the STEM Education (below) implemented in local school districts we plan to assist in the planning and conducting of races between schools.

GRC STEM Education

The Derby’s Education Program uses the tools and values of Soap Box Derby racing to introduce Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to students in an enjoyable, engaging way.

The Soap Box Derby’s Gravity Racing Challenge® STEM Team Competition is an exciting opportunity for students in grades 3-12 to compete against other school and youth organization teams. Divisions include Stock, Super Stock, High School Super Stock, and Engineering Design Challenge. This competition is held at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

The STEM-Based Education Program is designed to provide students, educators and OST providers with project- and standards-based, intercurricular learning opportunities that are gravity powered and STEM driven! STEM education not only provides young learners with hands-on opportunities to build Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills, it also provides the building blocks for practical skills that will help them in many facets of life.

We intend to petition the Wood County Board of Education to introduce the established Soap Box Derby Racing STEM program into the curriculum (it has been a part of the curriculum of many school districts in Ohio for many years) and to work actively with the Board and individual schools to implement the program.

Software Breakdown

We believe it is in the best interest of the company for the four officers to all use the same software and version for most efficient file sharing. For security of corporate records, we plan to buy a refurbished laptop PC each for the secretary and treasurer. We believe we can buy servicable laptops for under $300 each. We must make sure they are sufficiently powerful to support newer versions of Windows as they are released.

  • Microsoft 365 Business Standard for four corporate officers, includes secure cloud storage for file sharing and data backup: $12.50/user/month = $50/mo.

  • Intuit QuickBooks specifically designed for non-profits. Allows multiple users for accounting and auditor access without sharing passwords. Accepts donations by credit card, debit card, bank transfer, cash, or check. Use the QuickBooks mobile app to record money on mobile devices. Instantly creates reports as needed to keep stakeholders in the loop, or to prepare for the annual IRS filing. $90/month.

  • Norton 360 Deluxe full scope security witn antivirus and VPN to prevent intrusion. One subscription covers 5 PCs; each of the four officers covered. Half price for the first year then $119.99/year, averaging $10/mo, billed annually.

Alternate security/antivirus: PC Matic, full antivirus plus VPN, covers 5 devices. $100/year.

Summary:

  •   $50 Office 365
  •   $90 Quick Books
  •   $10 Norton 360
  • $150 per month

  1. Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. [BACK]

 2. The distance between cars at the finish line is often the width of three sheets of paper; times are in the hundredths of a second. Electronic timers at the finish line are absolutely essential. [BACK]

 3. Race cars have to be transported from the pit area and/or the finish line back up to the starting gate on specially equipped flatbed trailers. For insurance purposes we need to actually own them. [BACK]

 4. In order for a race to be sanctioned by International Soap Box Derby® a Franchse Fee per event is charged based on the classes of race being conducted. There are three classes of race: Stock, Super Stock, and Masters. We plan to hold a two-class event our first year and will try to advance to Masters class in later seasons. [BACK]
