Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers for these positions. Keep in mind that there is no financial compensation for these positions except as provided in Article 7 Section 3 of the Bylaws, but you will have a chance to make a significant difference in some kid’s life!

The Officers and Directors shall receive no compensation other than reimbursement of actual and reasonable expenses. However, provided the compensation structure complies with Sections relating to “Contracts Involving Officers” as stipulated under these Bylaws, and nothing in these Bylaws shall be construed to preclude any Officer from serving the Corporation in any other capacity and receiving compensation for services rendered.

Documents under “Related Resources” (below) include IRS publications relative to 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations (the rules we must follow as a tax-exempt corporation).

Positions Available

Everyone associated with Parkersburg Soap Box Derby, Inc. serves with no financial compensation. The following volunteer positions are immediately available. Come be a part of something great!


Position: Secretary

Description (as worded in our Bylaws): The Secretary shall be the custodian of all records and documents of the Corporation which are required to be kept at the principal office of the Corporation, shall act as secretary at all meetings of the Board, shall prepare an agenda and keep the minutes of all such meetings in books prvided for that purpose. To assist in the preparation of the minutes, the meeting may be recorded without notice to attendees. It should, however, be noted on the agenda that the meeting may be recorded. The Secretary shall attend to the giving and serving of all notices of the Corporation and shall see that the seal of the Corporation (when applicable) is affixed to all documents, the execution of which on behalf of the Corporation under its seal is duly authorized in accordance with the provisions of these Bylaws.

Requirements: Must have a heart for youth development in general and Soap Box Derby racing in particular. Must have sufficient free time to devote to the position. Should have relevant experience in preparing agendas, keeping minutes, and preparing business correspondence.

Comments: Will be appointed for an initial two-year term (2024-2025) in office, with elections to be held in December 2025 for calendar years 2026 and 2027. Please refer to our ByLaws Article 7, Section 5 - Elections.


Position: Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer

Description (as worded in our Bylaws):

(a) The Treasurer shall keep and maintain adequate and accurate accounts of all the properties, business, and financial transactions of the Corporation, including accounts of its assets, liabilities, receipts, disbursements, gains, losses, capital, retained earnings, and other matters customarily included in financial statements.

(b) The Treasurer shall ensure the deposit of all money and other valuables of the Corporation. Furthermore, the Treasurer shall disburse, or cause to be disbursed, the funds of the Corporation as may be approved by the Board and shall render to the President and/or Board, whenever they request it, an account of all the Treasurer’s transactions as Treasurer and of the financial condition of the Corporation.

(c) The Treasurer shall prepare and present at each regular meeting at which a quorum is present a Financial Report which contains, as a minimum, the following information:

  • The balance of each account at the beginning of the calendar month.
  • A detailed chronological list of all receipts into each account during the calendar month, including date, general source[1] (e.g., the individual or event), and amount.
  • A detailed chronological list of all disbursements out of each account during the calendar month, including date, check number (or designation as a debit card, credit card, or ACH[2] transaction), amount, payee, and purpose.
  • A detailed chronological list of all transfers between all accounts during the calendar month.
  • The balance of each account at the end of the calendar month.

Requirements: Must have a heart for youth development in general and Soap Box Derby racing in particular. Must have sufficient free time to devote to the position. Should have relevant experience in accounting or bookkeeping using computer software (e.g. Quicken, QuickBooks, etc.).

Comments: Will be appointed for an initial two-year term (2024-2025) in office, with elections to be held in December 2025 for calendar years 2026 and 2027. Please refer to Article 7, Section 5 - Elections in our Bylaws.


Positions: Directors (several)

Description (as worded in our Bylaws):

The President may appoint Directors to have various responsibilities and perform various duties as deemed appropriate for the efficient and effective functioning of the Corporation. Directors serve at the pleasure of the President and have voice but no vote over the affairs of the Corporation. They are encouraged to make observations and suggestions as needed. Directors may attend Board meetings and are free to hold their own meetings at their discretion.

No experience is necessary, but if you have previous experience with a non-profit organization or with other youth-development activities — especially if you have ever been involved with Soap Box Derby — we really want to talk to you. Other Volunteer Opportunities

As the Soap Box Derby program grows in Parkersburg there will always be numerous opportunities to help out. If you have ever worked with or been a part of any non-profit organization you know that there is always work to be done. We will always need:

  • Mentors to help and encourage kids year-round
  • Committees of various kinds
  • Program promoters and “cheerleaders” (encouragers)
  • And on race days we will also need
    • Race officials
    • Starters
    • Timers
    • Announcers
    • Communicators
    • Transporters
    • Traffic/crowd controllers
    • EMS Standbys

Resources and Continuing Education for Officers and Directors

These documents include IRS publications relative to 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations (the rules we must follow as a tax-exempt corporation). To ensure that we do not violate the provisions of tax exemption (and thereby lose our exemption and face possible criminal charges), all officers, potential officers, and directors of the corporation should be familiar with these documents and classes, especially the ones with the flashing red arrow.


  1. For 501(c)(3) accounting, direct contributions (other than at events) must be accounted for by name and address of the contributor. [BACK]
