Soap Box Derby® Racing for the Mid-Ohio Valley

Soap Box Derby racers of 1972

We are in REAL trouble! Since launching our corporation and website on February 22, 2024, we have been asking the community to support us. So far we have received a total of only  $476 of the $28,146 we need before we can host our first race. We cannot host Soap Box Derby racing without the financial support of our community. Here is a list of our immediate needs and why we need so much before we can host our first race. If you want to see Soap Box Derby racing in Parkersburg, you need to jump in and support us now. Thanks!!!

Youth between the ages of 7 and 19* are eligible to race in the All-American Soap Box Derby® youth gravity racing program. Using specially designed kits to build their cars with the help of a parent or mentor, youth around the world compete in races for the title of Champion! Several school discticts in Ohio build Soap Box Derby racers as part of their STEM[1] curriculum.

Local and Rally races are organized each year by over 100 officially sanctioned Soap Box Derby race cities around the world. Competing in these races gives youth opportunities to learn new skills while building their car, and racing for a chance to qualify for the annual World Championship Race.

Parkersburg is proud to once again join over 100 race cities around the world qualifying champs for the annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby® World Championship race at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. As nearly as we can determine, the last Derby was conducted in Parkersburg in 1980. The above photo is from the 1972 Derby in Parkersburg. The photo to the right is from the 1969 Derby.

We are bringing the Soap Box Derby back to Parkersburg because we think it will bring families and community together for a common cause: THE KIDS! And with your assistance we will bring Derby racing back to the Mid-Ohio Valley bigger and better than ever before!

Soap Box Derby® Racing is open to all youth between the ages of 7 and 19.

Soap Box Derby “franchises” are granted to cover a certain radius from the host city. We aren’t certain yet, but we anticipate that our “franchise area” will include not just Wood County, but at least part of each of our bordering counties of both West Virginia and Ohio, so our efforts will be extended to all the counties in our area.

We are currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers for these key positions in our organization.
